Staying at one resort can get you a good hotel rate, but they will get it all back and then some if they trap all of your spending. Some of these chains have hotels all throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and some of the Waikiki hotels they have are good deals. Do you really need to stay in an ocean front room 25 stories up, or will a hotel one block from the beach offer a lot of the same amenities, but you have to walk a block to the beach and watch the sunset instead of from your balcony? That block in from the ocean can save you 50% or more off the oceanfront rooms!

Rent a car, Hawaii has some of the cheapest car rental rates anywhere around, the best deals are by the week. You can drive almost all the way around the island of Oahu and it is a big island with lots to see. They have free visitor magazines all over the place and they have deals on everything that they would offer in a package deal like hula buffets, discount admissions to the cultural shows and submarine rides the visitor magazines have all sorts of other stuff as well. With or without a car you can do inexpensive things like Diamond Head Park, the Honolulu Zoo & the Waikiki Aquarium. You can do a lot of the stuff in Waikiki without a car even Hanauma Bay, but for the rest of the island you really need one.
